12th ANNIVERSARY OF MOULIN ROUGE
Moulin Rouge, revue of all times, is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year. Though it is hard to believe, Moulin Rouge - cabaret legend, kept its unrivalled position on the list of places worth seeing in Paris.
Those who wants to see with their own eyes the space (?) where cancan was born should make their way to the Clichy Boulevard (82 boulevard de Clichy) on the famous Montmartre.
Where lies the phenomenon of Moulin Rouge? To answer that we need to reach its history.
The last decade of the 19th century was a particular stage in history of France. Year 1889 was not only known for establishing Moulin Rouge but was also the synonym of rest between wars and a period of transition between centuries when strict social barriers collapsed.
At the same time the industrial revolution promised a better life for all, with no exceptions what revealed in mixing the middle-class mixed with riffraff. This date also stands for the creation of visual symbol of France and Paris - the Eiffel Tower. Few years later the first cinematograph appeared in Europe giving the opportunity to capture a motion picture.
As a result of all this spectacular changes a new popculture was born spontaneously characterized by vitality, optimism, energy and... hedonism. In that extraordinary atmosphere of Paris at the turn of the centuries artists absorbed and inspired with the colourful, joyful coffee-house life, broke completely with the rigid classicism of that period.
A real cultural and moral revolution performed which, in great mesure, was also inflicted by unprudish atmosphere of a place called after the imitation of red mill, which sparkles at the entrance to Moulin Rouge till this days.
